Srinagar, Jul 22 (KNO): Mental stimulation, regular physical exercise, stress management and nutrition-rich diets are some of the main ways through which a person may keep their brain young, doctors say. Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), doctors said that research has found that stimulating new connections between nerve cells may help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological "plasticity" and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss. They said that regular exercise increases the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the brain region responsible for thought. "Engaging in regular physical activity can improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and promotes the growth of new brain cells," they said. Dr Showkat, a cardiologist, said that exercise lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, helps balance blood sugar, and reduces mental stress, all of which benefit both brain and heart health. He advised improving blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, considering low-dose aspirin, avoiding tobacco and other drugs, caring for emotions and ensuring restful sleep to maintain good mental and physical health. "Adequate sleep is crucial for brain health as poor sleep can impair cognitive function and increase the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night," he added. Dr Firdous, a neurologist, said that chronic stress can negatively impact the brain. He recommended practising stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness meditation and deep breathing exercises to maintain cognitive health. “Routine health check-ups can help detect and manage conditions like hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol which can affect brain health. Managing these conditions can reduce the risk of cognitive decline,” he said. He added, “Maintaining strong social connections and engaging in social activities can protect against memory loss and cognitive decline. Interacting with friends and family, participating in group activities, and volunteering can provide the necessary mental stimulation and emotional support.” According to doctors, maintaining a balanced lifestyle that includes physical activity, healthy eating, mental stimulation, social engagement, quality sleep and stress management is key to promoting long-term brain health—(KNO)
